Duties/Pligte

  • Providing technical (analytical) support to researchers, i.e., hot desking, consultancy, etc.;
  • Coordinating microbiome skills development and training via workshops, short courses, journal club, etc.;
  • Assisting microbiome researchers and students with protocol design, grant applications and data management (including data uploads to repositories);
  • Strengthening cross-faculty networks to capture multidisciplinary strengths;
  • Broadening the AMI's scientific networks with local and international collaborators;
  • Participating in AMI management meetings;
  • The incumbent will be primarily based at Tygerberg campus and will sometimes be required to travel between Tygerberg and the main campus in Stellenbosch.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • At least an MSc in Computational Biology, OR Data Science with a background in Biological Sciences;
  • Experience in microbiome analysis and biostatistics as evidenced by peer-reviewed research outputs (such as publications and conference presentations) and workshops/courses;
  • At least three years' experience in bioinformatics and/or data science;
  • Proficient in Linux, R and more than one of the following programming languages: Python, C, C++;
  • The ability to solve problems independently and effectively;
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Previous experience in hosting computational training and workshops;
  • Proven ability to participate in multidisciplinary projects and to capture existing multidisciplinary strengths within a university environment;
  • Track record in postgraduate student supervision;
  • Successful original grant funding, ideally from international sources;
  • A valid drivers' license and own transport.
